Regulation of the European Parliament and of the Council on Energy Market Integrity and Transparency (REMIT)Regulation on Energy Market Integrity and TransparencyThe European Union adopted new, stricter rules on wholesale trading of electricity and natural gas. The main objective of this Regulation is to prevent the use of inside information or other forms of market manipulation which distort wholesale prices of energy, and normally mean that businesses and consumers are paying more for their energy than they need to. The Regulation came into force on 28th of December 2011. For the first time, energy trading will be monitored at the EU level in order to detect market abuses. National regulatory authorities in Member States will put in place penalties that will help eliminate and prevent market manipulations.
